Contraband

From a reader who weighed in on the Kix comments:

Agreed. Although, in my house growing up my mom approved of sugar cereal. In fact, we always had the good stuff...cocoa puffs, froot loops, and the like. Now I don't like that crap. I think I'm on to somethin'...like a theory of some kind.

Interesting theory here-was sugar cereal devoured in my family simply because it was contraband? Is this like the liberterian standpoint on the drug war, i.e. put illegal drugs in every corner grocery store and no one will use them anymore because they'll no longer be taboo? Fascinating. Maybe we should buy nothing but flavored cereals so that the Kix and Cheerios and Special Ks of the world will become cool?

Discuss.

It might be why I justify having Oreos for breakfast some mornings...

But apparently Granny allowed mom to have Oreos for breakfast on occasion.

It might just be an every other generation thing.

Christian, yes, that's exactly it. I have seen the same with TV. I have a friend who was prohibited from watching TV growing up. When she moved out on her own, she couldn't get enough of it. Still can't, nearly 8 years later. She literally goes home from work and watches TV until she goes to bed. Those who are allowed to eat sugar cereals and watch TV growing up don't find it novel because they've grown up with it, so it's easy not to get carried away. What do you think?

Also, Kory and I have discussed the Libertarian stand on this matter a lot. And, I actually think I agree with it to a point. I mean, I think a lot of what makes some things so desirable is the sense of rebellion involved....

I do think that when something is taboo or against the rules/law it draws a sort of fascination to it. And I am with Hillary. My mom only allowed us healthy food, but her mom was the same way.

I may have eliminated my need for a therapist.
